Live Review: 2 Plus 2 on the Moon
Show Recap
Thursday night at Ida Red I saw an impressive live show from an instrumental band called 2+2 on the Moon. Most people shy away from instrumental music dubbing it “music for musicians.” It is hard to keep people interested in a 45 minute live show if there are no lyrics and no vocalist. Sorry to play further into the collective lead singer’s diva mentality, but its true. At least, most of the time it’s true.
The case of 2 + 2 on the Moon happens to disprove this theory. Aficionados of instrumental/experimental music would most closely compare the Moon to Explosions in the Sky. The four piece sticks pretty close to the formula, guitar, bass, drums and synth. However, the effect produced with this simple set up is intricate and lush. At one point during the set, the percussionist brings a separate guitar and amp onstage. He creates a wafted feedback effect with the amp, then proceeds to slap the back of the guitar with his hand, and later with a tambourine. Talk about a creative way to get the desired effect! Both the drummer and guitarist seem to ooze the music from their pores, at some points during the set they seem utterly possessed.
These guys keep it interesting and fun to watch. Catch them next time they are out and about, and they will change your view of instrumental bands for good.

Just saw them tonight at Crystal Pistol (417 N. Main)… Wonderful, inspiring music. The music seems to have a story line behind it…. the slows and the builds… Just amazing!!
