Introducing: The Parakeet Chiefs

I must warn you from the beginning of this post that I am compromised. I am on the inside. A double agent, if you will. It is unethical to write this blog post without letting you know the following information: I am married to the bass player of The Parakeet Chiefs. That being said, I also must tell you that I have watched this band incubate from their inception in January. Every practice, every mini-gig, every equipment purchase, I know about it.

Whew, I am glad we got that out of the way, because even though I have been present for this band’s maturation, that doesn’t make it any less impressive or exciting. The Chiefs are a throwback to a simpler time, when backing harmonies, muted strumming and sock hops set the tone. That’s right, were talking about a Doowop/Rockabilly/Birth of Rock and Roll band complete with skinny ties.

Covers? No, no covers. Well, one cover. All the songs less one are originals. The fun part of listening to the Chiefs is the sheer contradiction. Hearing “I’m gonna kill you baby, yes I am…” from a metal band would strike fear into the hearts of your average music fan, but coming from The Chiefs its just another afternoon in the malt shop. Think Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the Righteous Brothers, all with a mad chip on their shoulders. But there’s some soft, cuddly songs too. Look out for “Why?” and “Robot Girl,” two of my personal favorites. And don’t miss “Telephone,” which is NOT and homage to Lady Gaga, but rather a romantic ditty about a friend who wants to be more.

There’s no recorded music available yet, so you’ll have to become their fan on Facebook to get updates. Why am I telling you this now? Well, because you can get a Chief-filled weekend if this sounds like something you’re into. Check them out tonight (4/9) around 8:30pm at the Blue Jackalope, and tomorrow night playing with Depression Era Blues-man Danny J. Buck at Joe Momma’s Pizza Downtown, at 9pm.

Enjoy, and expect to hear much more from these hep-cats.
