Elecro-New Wave Dance band Guardant (pronounced Gar-Daunt) has been on the scene in Tulsa for a few years. Sprouting out of the French Connections came this fun-filled synth band.

They’ve garnered quite a following of fans, and you’ll have a hard time finding room on the dance floor at any of their shows. They cite their influences as Devo, Cut Copy and LCD Soundsystem, but you wouldn’t be hard pressed to find a little Bloc Party or maybe some Justice and MSTRKRFT tossed in. In my favorite tune Discovery, the carmely too-cool tones of the vocalist swoon, “Feel as far as I get is everywhere but anywhere / And as far as you let me go is not near.”

You can catch Guardant this Sunday with La Panther Happens at Yellow Brick Road (YBR). This unlikely hole in the wall bar across from Oz on 15th street has begun hosting fun music on Sunday nights. You will boogie, you will shake it, and you will probably find some very cheap beer. Cheers!

Well, it’s been a little slow around here thanks to the Ice-pocalypse: 2010. It is a widely known fact that the Tulsan does not function well in ice and snow. However, more than 2 days cooped up in the house makes us hungry for action! This coming weekend will cure your cabin fever.

On Saturday February 6th, we at The Tulsa Project are launching this blog with a bang. La Panther Happens, Fiawna Forte, BRONCHO, Ghosts and The Televised will rock the house at The Eclipse. We will melt the snow with the heat from the amps!

Music will start promptly at 9pm, the cover is $5 and all proceeds go to the MDA. Also, local artists such as Chris Mantle, Stephanie Jones and Chandra Hall have donated work, so if you buy a piece, that money goes to MDA as well. Full bar, but only 21+!

We are ushering in a new era of music in Tulsa, where original music and ideas are celebrated. Come help us kick it off!

This show is going to be great! I will tell you a little about the bands:

Fiawna Forte–There are literally no words. Fiawna is a whirlwind femme-fatale who will steal your heart (and maybe your drink when you’re not looking). As Fiawna sings, the entire crowd formulates an “I want to date a musician, marry him/her and have babies and a white picket fence” fantasy. Well, see for yourself…

I’ve already done posts on Ghosts and La Panther Happens, so I want to tell you about The Televised. If I had to come up with a close comparison of genres, I have to say pop-punk. But ‘pop-punk’ sets off certain alarms in your head. Don’t be afraid. There are so many more sub-genres involved in what The Televised do. I’m talking singer-songwriter, ska, mariachi…how does it work, you ask? Seamlessly. I don’t know how a magician does his tricks, and frankly, I don’t want to know. I just want to be spellbound. That is what The Televised does, they spellbind you.

Coincidentally, you can catch them tonight at The Soundpony! 409 N. Main. I think they’re the only band on the schedule tonight, so you can savor it.

Lizard Police was crunchy, raw, energetic rock. I want to stave off the word screamo, but I dont think it’s far off.  Overall, enjoyable.

Barf Makeout are a curious bunch. Their singer is apathetically charming for someone who likes puke so much. Their tunes, take it or leave it, have shades of early Green Day. Punk to the core. I enjoyed their set.

La Panther Happens–If you’re looking for a 60′s style surf band with a dark side, La Panther is your ticket to poppy hooks and Beach Boy harmonies. Jhohn Casio, formerly of Elliott the Letter Ostrich, and Chris Rusk of Wighead pair their falsetto voices ardently. My favorite lyric is “Im gonna take all my troubles and paint them gold / Then I’ll be he richest man you know.” They haven’t been playing as frequently as their fans would prefer, so tonight’s the night to get your fix!

Barf Makeout–A punky, hardcore funny-fest, Barf Makeout suggests you “Barf Yourself Thin.” A comment on our overindulgent, superficial society, or a diet plan? You decide.

Lizard Police– Remember Only the Bugman? Well, Lizard Police is Mitch Gilliam’s newest project. I haven’t seen them live yet, so expect a full report tomorrow.
